on “Aspects of Multi-sided Platforms

Richard Schmalensee is the Howard W. Johnson Professor of Economics and Management and Director of the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research. He served as the John C Head III Dean of the MIT Sloan School of Management from 1998 through 2007. He was as a Member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers from 1989 through 1991 and Deputy Dean of MIT Sloan from 1996 through 1998. Professor Schmalensee is one of the fathers of modern Industrial Organization, author or co-author of 11 books and over 120 published articles, and co-editor of volumes I and II of the Handbook of Industrial Organization. His research has centered on industrial organization economics and its application to managerial and public policy issues, with particular emphasis on antitrust, regulatory, and environmental policies. His recent work has focused on multi-sided platform businesses, the topic of the IV Stackelberg Lecture.

Topics include theoretical and empirical papers on: online advertising, theory and evidence on competition for the market, innovation policy, markets with network effects, standardization & interoperability issues, standardization and industrial policy, economics of multi-sided markets, endogenous market structures for high-tech markets, competition policy for high-tech sectors.
