Codeste attituidini sono difatti quel che conta veramente nel futuro.”

Nel campo dell'economia, la
sovraspecializzazione è doppiamente disastrosa. Un uomo che è matematico e
nulla più che matematico potrà condurre una vita di stenti, ma non reca
danno ad alcuno. Un economista che è nulla più che un economista è un pericolo
per il suo prossimo. L'economia non è una cosa in sé; è lo studio di un
aspetto della vita dell'uomo in società... se, a causa di una crescente
specializzazione, il suo sapere economico resta divorziato da ogni
retroterra di filosofia sociale, egli rischia veramente di diventare un
venditore di fumo, dotato di ingegnosi stratagemmi per uscire dalle varie
difficoltà ma incapace di tenere il contatto con quelle virtù fondamentali
su cui si fonda una società sana. La moderna scienza economica va soggetta
ad un rischio…la trattazione dei problemi sociali come mere questioni
tecniche e non come un aspetto della generale ricerca della Buona
